~Tips for First Time Travelers~

I'll never forget my first vacation out of the country. I had traveled a bit growing up but it was mostly made up of beach trips, mountain getaways and an occasional city escape here in the USA.

My honeymoon was my first trip out of the country. Everything about being emerged in a new culture, in an unfamiliar setting with people who were so different from me was fascinating. I was hooked!

While I loved that first experience there are things that I wish I would have known...things that I have learned over the years in all of my travels. For you first or even second time travelers I hope that this list of tips comes in handy and helps you get the most out of your first travel experiences.

1. Don't expect things to be the way they are at home.

2. Be open to new experiences, new food and new things.

3. Learn a few words and phrases in the native language and use them often. People are much more likely to meet you half way if you attempt to speak to them in their language first.

And no, I am not short.... all of my family
members are over 6 ft tall
4. Be respectful of cultural norms and use your manners.

5. Brush up on your bargaining skills. While it isn't a common practice in the US it is very common in other countries.

6. Visit the tourist highlights but take some time to explore other areas to get a real feel for the culture and its people.

7. Eat and drink local! You can save money outside of the tourist areas. Indulging in local foods and local beers can save you quite a bit.

8. It is normal to feel out of place or uncomfortable. Just push beyond those feelings and keep on moving.

9. Be flexible. You don't need to follow a strict schedule everyday.

10. Guard your passport and credit cards as if your life depends on it. No wallets in the back pocket gentlemen!

11. Remember that you are not in America. Don't expect people to speak English and cater to you. You are their guest in their country. Be polite and respectful while enjoying other countries.

12. Finally and perhaps most important, Have fun! Talk to people, be friendly, laugh and smile. Ask for help when you need it and soak up as much of the local culture as possible.

Using these tips you are sure to come home with memories that will last a lifetime!

Travel Smart...Save Money

The only thing that I love more than traveling is saving money! I work with clients of all types... those with unlimited budgets and those with tight budgets. Regardless of the vacation and the attached budget I want to be sure that my clients get the best deals possible.
Over the past few years I have learned all kinds of tips and tricks that help save my clients hundreds of dollars. I'm happy to share a few of those with you today.

1. Plan and Book in Advance
I have said this before and I will say it again, plan and book your trip early! Those last minute savings that you hear about rarely work out. More often than not you will pay a high price when planning a vacation within weeks of traveling.
2. Flexibility
This isn't always doable but having wiggle room within your travel plans can save you money. If your dates are flexible you could save hundreds but even being flexible with flight times can help. Early morning flights (and I mean EARLY) can help cut down the cost by fifty to a couple hundred dollars!
3. Travel during the "shoulder" or off seasons
Airfare to Europe during the off season costs about 1/3 of the price that you would pay if traveling in the summer. Hotels and tour guides are also available at a fraction of the cost. While the weather might be chilly, the savings are huge. As a bonus, you wont have to fight the crowds of tourists to see the major attractions and museums! The same rule applies to the Caribbean. The "shoulder" season offers great rates and great weather at a fraction of the cost!

4. Travel on the Weekdays
Specifically when flying International fly Monday-Thursday if possible. You can save around $100 alone by just avoiding the weekend surcharges!
5. Think "Local"
Renting a car? Rent through a local company for the best price. Hungry? Eat at a small local restaurant outside of the tourist areas. Looking for a drink? Indulge in local beers and wines. These simple acts will save you money and provide you with an authentic experience!
6. Talk to an expert
Yes, I am a bit biased because I am a travel agent but honestly, I can save you time and money! Travel agents spend all of their working hours analyzing flight routes, rates and policies, learning about the newest resorts and studying up on the latest travel hot spots. Name your budget and I will be sure that you get the best experience possible for the money you work so hard to save!
